New Moves for Creative Messages

WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO?
Our message is the most important message that could ever be presented.

It should be done with great preparation; it should be the most creative.

YOU’VE GOT BLESSED FEET
Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without preaching? Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace and bring glad tidings of good things!"

WE CAN READ – OR WE CAN SPEAK WITH AUTHORITY AND WONDER
Luk 4:17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And unrolling the book, He found the place where it was written,
Luk 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me; because of this He has anointed Me to proclaim the Gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and new sight to the blind, to set at liberty those having been crushed,
Luk 4:19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."
Luk 4:20 And rolling up the book, returning it to the attendant, He sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on Him.
Luk 4:21 And He began to say to them, Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your ears.
Luk 4:22 And all bore witness to Him and wondered at the gracious words which came out of His mouth. And they said, Is this not Joseph's son?

CHILDREN ARE CHANGING – WE HAVE TO CHANGE HOW WE TEACH
Children are so much more multi-sensory today
The TV and Internet are their greatest teachers
We need to keep children’s attention more than ever.

DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES
IN WORDS - Reading, writing, telling stories, playing word games, discussion, writing
BY REASONING - Experimenting, questioning, figuring out logical puzzles, calculating
IN IMAGES AND PICTURES - Designing, drawing, visualizing, doodling
KINESTETIC - Through sensations and physically doing. Dancing, running, jumping, building, touching, gesturing. Role plays, drama, movement, things to build, sports and physical games, tactile experiences, hands on learning.
VIA RHYTHMS AND MELODIES
- Singing, music, musical instruments, creating songs
INTERPERSONAL - By bouncing ideas off other people, Friends, group activities

PARABLES OF TODAY
Jesus taught using parables.
The original Greek word for parable mean “A PLACING BESIDE”
Parables are a comparison.
What are some things can we place beside spiritual truth?
What are the parables of today – Movies!

Teaching children to draw spiritual truths from things in their world.

For children to be interested in your world, YOU HAVE TO ENTER THERES!
JESUS ENTERED OUR WORLD!!!!

1Co 9:19 I am a free man, nobody's slave; but I make myself everybody's slave in order to win as many people as possible.
1Co 9:20 While working with the Jews, I live like a Jew in order to win them; and even though I myself am not subject to the Law of Moses, I live as though I were when working with those who are, in order to win them.
1Co 9:21 In the same way, when working with Gentiles, I live like a Gentile, outside the Jewish Law, in order to win Gentiles. This does not mean that I don't obey God's law; I am really under Christ's law.
1Co 9:22 Among the weak in faith I become weak like one of them, in order to win them. So I become all things to all people, that I may save some of them by whatever means are possible.
1Co 9:23 All this I do for the gospel's sake, in order to share in its blessings.

JACKIE CHAN MOVIES
He uses weapons of the enemy against them
He uses whatever is available around him (chair) as a weapon against the enemy
HARRY POTTER etc (how can we use this to talk about the truth?)
We need to use things of this world to teach biblical truths.

THE INTERNET
Such a great resource, unlimited resources.

Involving the children in presenting (SEE KIDMO)
Have something for the child to repeat (a main point that you’re trying get across), say it fast, say it slow, say it really fast, American accent
Getting them to teach the lesson, give them fun homework.
Teaching a bible verse using actions. I.e. the wages (rub your fingers) of sin is death (look like your dying), the gift (tie a bow) of God is eternal life
Everytime you hear a word (e.g. Jesus) cheer

Creative planning times
I took my team to Ikea and wrote a whole lot of ideas for curriculum for Sunday school
When writing messages or coming up with ideas – go to a creative/inspirational environment.
Write messages with a team or get friends/family to look over your message
It is so helpful to plan ahead, what you will teach for a month, term even a year.
If you spend some time preparing a terms worth of lessons outlines it will take less time week to week
The less you’ll freak out every week you have to prepare a lesson.

Make up a game to do with your message
Change a game/tweak a game to illustrate parts of your service.
Ship to shore (change the names to suit story I.e. Luke 7:11-15 Nain, Great Crowd, Gate of the City, My son has died, Compassion Jerusalem, Healing, Blind man, Arise etc)
Rob the nest
Death, burial, resurrection.

Powerpoint Presentations

Personal stories/or memory
They connect with people you
Then they will connect with your message
ACTIVITY: Everyone should be able to think of a memory from a keyword and be able to tell a story almost immediately

  • Bicycle
  • Love
  • Hate
  • Homework

Make up a story
Jesus made up a lot of stories
They taught a spiritual principal

Draw a picture to tell the story
Draw a silly stick figure drawing while your telling the story

Give them something to touch and activity to do
Write things on bits of paper – put them in a box
Write key phrase or bible verse on paper, cut it up and make a puzzle.

RE Class
Ask if you can use a tv/video player (come early)
Laptop
Aslan and the Chronicles of Narnia
PLEASE Burn your curriculum. So many of them are just teaching the story. A lot of them lack application and response.
Opener (Bible in a brown sack, most amazing thing in the world)

STRUCTURING OF YOUR MESSAGE

KNOW WHAT? – What is it they need to know? Teach the story.

SO WHAT? – How does that apply to my life? Connect the story to their life. What is the principal behind the story. What does God want me to know through this story?

NOW WHAT? – What do I need to do today, right now? What should be my response to this message right now?

DRAMA
Get the children to act the story out (Give them their lines on a piece of paper)
Create a drama with your leaders
Use facial expressions (practice them in a mirror).

Be a creative collector
Be a horder/collector/scavenger of articles, pictures, kids magazines, toys sermons from the net to use one day
Always be on the look out.
Have a system to organise what you collect
Always be thinking about what your topics are when you go shopping

You Tube
You’d be amazed at the amount of useful things you can find on You Tube.
Lego man bible stories
Amazing talents
Car races
Movie clips

USING YOU TUBE CLIPS

Download – Firefox Internet Browser from www.mozilla.com

Download www.videodownloader.net (will allow you to download youtube videos in Firefox Internet Browser)

Wimpy Player - http://www.wimpyplayer.com/ (Plays youtube videos you download

To import youtube videos into movie maker download program from http://www.winff.org/

Mindmapping/Brainstorming

KUNG FU PANDA
Crane - fly above problems?
Monkey - sense of humour?
Viper - slippery, sneeky (we need to be sneeky with the enemy - Jackie Chan uses the weapons of the enemy against them - ie. use cartoons, popular culture of kids today to reach them)
Mantis - Praying mantis. We need to be kids ministers who pray. The praying mantis 'prays' before it pounces on the enemy?
Tiger - powerful, get God's power?
Panda - lazy (we can't be lazy in Kids ministry anymore!)
There's also a dude who's like a sensei (which could be like how we have to keep going to the father for guidance and the word of God for
teaching, He's our master)
